NORGREN solenoid valve working principle

The sliding valve sleeve and spool of NORGREN solenoid valves feature an extremely small fit clearance. Mechanical impurities or rust in the valve body can easily cause the spool to to get stuck. The fundamental solution is to disassemble the solenoid valve, remove the spool and valve sleeve, and clean them with carbon tetrachloride (CCl₄) to ensure the spool moves freely inside the sleeve. During disassembly, note the assembly sequence of each component and the external wiring positions for correct reassembly and wiring. 

ASCO Explosion-proof Solenoid Valves: The GLC series is constructed entirely of brass. It is an extremely durable miniature 2/2 or 3/2 direct-acting valve designed for applications requiring higher flow rates. Equipped with a larger valve body bore and bigger ports, it delivers a higher Cv value. A solenoid valve consists of an electromagnetic coil and a magnetic core, together with a valve body containing one or more orifices. When the coil is energized or de-energized, movement of the magnetic core either permits or blocks fluid flow through the valve body, thereby changing the fluid direction. The electromagnetic assembly of a solenoid valve comprises a fixed iron core, moving iron core and coil; the valve assembly includes a sliding spool, valve sleeve and spring base. The electromagnetic coil is mounted directly onto the valve body, which is enclosed within a sealed tube, forming a compact integrated unit. Common solenoid valve types include 2-position 2-way and 2-position 3-way valves. "2-position" refers to energized and de-energized states for the solenoid, and open/closed states for the controlled valve. When current flows through the coil, magnetic excitation pulls the moving iron core toward the fixed iron core. The moving iron core drives the sliding spool and compresses the spring, shifting the spool position to alter fluid direction. When the coil loses power, spring force pushes the spool back and returns the moving iron core, restoring fluid flow to its original path.

NORGREN solenoid valves have one air inlet (connected to the air supply), one air outlet (supplying air to target equipment), and one exhaust port (normally fitted with a silencer; the silencer may be omitted if noise is acceptable). A 5/2 solenoid valve features one air inlet, one forward-action air outlet and one reverse-action air outlet (supplying air for forward and reverse motion of the target actuator respectively), plus one forward-action exhaust port and one reverse-action exhaust port (both fitted with silencers). For small automatic control equipment, pneumatic tubing generally uses 8~12 mm industrial rubber hoses. Popular solenoid valve brands include Japan SMC, Taiwan Airtac and other domestic manufacturers. Electrically speaking, 3/2 solenoid valves are usually single-solenoid (single coil), while 5/2 solenoid valves are commonly double-solenoid (dual coil).

NORGREN Solenoid Valves: The GLD-Cryo series is a 2-way high-flow miniature cryogenic valve rated for temperatures as low as -320°F (-196°C). Depending on temperature requirements, GLD-Cryo valves can handle liquid nitrogen (LN₂), liquid carbon dioxide (LCO₂) and other ultra-low-temperature media. Its construction includes a PTFE-coated plunger, 316 stainless steel stem guide and plunger spring, encapsulated coil, and PTFE or Rulon base seal. This delivers highly reliable cryogenic performance, perfect for applications demanding long service life and precise media temperature control.

Working Principle of NORGREN Solenoid Valves

Pilot-operated NORGREN solenoid valves rely on medium pressure inside the pipeline to open the valve. A minimum pilot pressure, typically 0.2 bar, is therefore required; the exact pilot pressure requirement varies with manufacturing tolerances. In addition, pipeline media must not contain solid particles larger than 0.5 mm, matching the size of the pilot orifice. Failure to meet either condition will prevent normal operation of the pilot solenoid valve, though this does not mean the valve itself is defective.

By contrast, direct-acting solenoid valves rely purely on the electromagnetic coil to drive the spool and open the valve. They only require that the pipeline contains no large hard particles, which would damage sealing and accelerate spool wear during valve closure.
